First Official Week: Monday

Monday 1.13.2013:

Woke up late again...still not accustomed to the time zone. Met my last three roommates, Sarah (from GW), Becca (from Cornell) and Josh (from Georgetown). They are all really lovely people. Becca, Catie and I ventured to get groceries since we had been living off M&Ms, Pringles, and Guinness up until this point. We went to Dunnes which is a multilevel store that sells clothes on all floors except for the basement. In the basement there is a grocery store. Being dumb Americans we didn't figure out that the food was in the basement until we went up every level. After finally finding the food we did some shopping. I will admit that shopping in a foreign country is interesting the first time since everything is located in different places and certain items just don't exist. We got our basics and left. The other adjustment to living in Europe is that whatever you buy at the grocery store you have to carry home. I looked a little ridiculous carrying my stuffed tote bag, a 12-pack of toilet paper, and 6-pack of ciders through downtown Dublin. When we got back Sarah, Becca, Catie and I decided we wanted to go to campus for a campus tour and to take care some administrative things. We attempted to figure out a bus that went to school. Although we finally found a bus that would work it ran extremely late causing us to miss the campus tour at University College Dublin. When we got to campus we met up with the other Illinois students and paid for a couple of day trips for the weekend (pictures to come later) and got our Uni IDs. Although it was a short trip to campus it did help us get a basic idea of what school looks like. We grabbed another bus back home and everyone in the apartment (Catie, Sarah, Becca, Melissa, Josh and me) went and grabbed a dinner. It was fun to see the dynamic of the whole apartment for the first time. After my mediocre tuna-melt (Yes, Dad your tuna melts are wayyyyyyyy better) Becca, Catie and I decided to head to the Illinois boys apartment for some ciders and beers. Getting to the boys apartment is a bit of a walk, and by a bit of a walk I mean a 30 minute walk. Even though this took a while it was fun to see more of the city and to get to know Becca a little better. We finally got to the boys apartment and enjoyed meeting more people. After a couple of ciders we all decided to go check out one of the local clubs, Diceys. That was an ... experience. For all of Illinois out there, picture Red Lion on a busy Friday night and then picture that on steroids and then multiple it by 1 hundred. That is the equivalent of Diceys. The picture below does not do this club justice but here one of the pics from the night:

After Diceys, everyone decided to call it a night. I couldn't find Becca or tie a (we also didn't have phones to contact each other), so Joel and Spencer (two of the Illinios kids here) walked me home. Thankfully both Catie and Becca made it home just fine as well.
